The Importance of Backing Up Email
Every day thousands of email messages are created as part of a company’s business operations. In 1999 alone Americans sent and received over 6.8 trillion email messages – approximately 2.2 billion messages each day – compared with 293 million pieces of first class mail.1 Furthermore, the average office worker will send and receive between 60 and 200 email messages each day. 2 Because email has become such an important part of daily life, the need to protect critical email information has become a necessity. Heritage Stockade Remote Backup is designed to protect critical email information contained within Microsoft’s Outlook, Outlook Express or other pop3 mail client software.

Why backup Email?
As computer technology has advanced and people have become accustomed to using email, the importance and complexity of email has evolved from a few simple text messages into a multitude of mission-critical documents.3 Businesses and individuals regularly send and receive negotiations, bids, proposals, contracts, legal agreements, and many other forms of vital correspondence via email.
If a computer user were to suffer the loss of his vital email correspondence, this loss would seriously affect his ability to perform normal business functions. The loss of email data in can occur through a variety of ways such as a computer virus, a hard drive crash, a power surge, and a host of other reasons. If the user is unable to recover his email data, then the user may have to spend many hours or days reconstructing his email correspondence from memory. A good backup would enable the user to quickly and accurately restore his vital email data. Instead of spending hours and days recovering email correspondence, a quality backup allows the email user to be back in business in a matter of minutes.

How Heritage Stockade Backs up Email
Heritage Stockade can backup email in two different ways. The standard method is to simply close the email client software (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.) before the backup routine runs, and Heritage Stockade will automatically backup any new or changed data . The other method is to manually create the archive file using whatever means the software vendor may supply and let Heritage Stockade back that up. In this manner, the email client software can always be left open.
